ECONOMIC COUNCIL TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE RM
The Government of the Republic of Moldova approved today a new draft law that will regulate the activity of digital nomads in the country, allowing them to obtain a residence permit for up to two years, with the possibility of extension. This measure is part of the digitalization package developed on the Economic Council platform with the support of ATIC and GIZ. Its aim is to attract international professionals working in digital industries – such as IT, creative sectors, communications, and more.
Moldova offers all the necessary elements for remote work and can better connect the country to the global digital economy. Authorities estimate that more than 1,500 digital nomads will choose Moldova each year as a destination for work and life, bringing a direct economic impact of approximately 280 million lei annually.
A digital nomad is a professional who works remotely, typically in fields such as IT, marketing, design, consulting, or online education, and who can carry out their activities from anywhere in the world, needing only an internet connection.
Moldova needs these specialists because they bring international expertise, consume local services, boost sectors such as tourism and telecommunications, and contribute to transforming the country into an attractive hub for innovation and digital business.
These legislative changes were promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization as part of its efforts to support business digitalization and connect Moldova’s economy to international markets.
The Secretariat of the Economic Council to the Prime Minister is supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, funded by the UK Government’s Good Governance Fund.
