ECONOMIC COUNCIL TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF THE RM
5 April 2024 – The mechanism for coordinating the accession process and the organisation and functioning of the negotiating team, as well as the stages of accession and the key sectors to focus on, were presented to the business community at the Working Group 5 “Increasing Moldova’s Competitiveness in the Context of EU Accession” of the Economic Council to the Prime Minister of Moldova. At the beginning of the meeting, the Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration, Cristina Gherasimov, called on the business sector to join the process of preparing Moldova’s accession to the EU. This process is a historic one and it is up to the current generation, and this places a serious responsibility on those who contribute to our country’s accession to the EU,” the official said. According to Ghenadie Marian, head of the European Integration Office, the mechanism for coordinating the accession process consists of four levels: The higher political level, the government level, the inter-institutional coordination level and the operational level. The business community is called upon to contribute to the implementation of the obligations arising from the Association Agreement. It should be noted that during the negotiations the Republic of Moldova will have to implement EU legislation and standards in all 35 negotiating chapters, and the business community will have the opportunity to provide the necessary expertise in the process of transposition of the EU acquis and standards into national legislation and to communicate the possible impacts expected from the implementation of EU legislation. Business representatives welcomed the initiative of the Office for European Integration. In this context, Dan Nuțiu, Chairman of Working Group 5 and Executive President of the Association of Romanian Investors in the Republic of Moldova, noted that the process of transposition of European legislation into national legislation is a highly responsible process and consultations with all stakeholders are crucial to ensure a positive impact of this process. In the coming period, the Secretariat of the Economic Council will collect from business associations the list of those interested in specific chapters of the negotiations, as well as proposals on how to participate in and support this process. The Secretariat of the Prime Minister’s Economic Council is supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, with financial assistance from the UK Government’s Good Governance Fund.
