How do we measure the social impact of social enterprises?

The second meeting of the ad-hoc Working Group on Entrepreneurship Development of the Economic Council to the Prime Minister took place. The topic of the meeting was the development of an effective and simplified set of indicators for assessing the performance of social enterprises and a universal methodology for multidimensional assessment of the social entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Social enterprise is becoming increasingly important for economic development as community problems are transformed into solutions that can be systemic and innovative, and this in turn has a social impact. More business initiatives improve people’s health, protect the environment, create more economic opportunities for disadvantaged people.

Despite the positive influence they have on the economy, social enterprises are still a nebulous phenomenon in the business world. There is no universal methodology for assessing social impact and how to combine business principles with a social entrepreneurship component. These are yet to be finalised by the Working Group and translated into a specification.
